Scope
Altenia has successfully completed the construction of two next-generation agrivoltaic plants in the province of Catania, with a total capacity of approximately 113 MW. The projects were developed for a leading international energy company and mark an important milestone in Altenia’s commitment to building sustainable solar power plants that combine advanced technologies with low environmental impact solutions, actively contributing to the energy transition.
Activities
Hydraulic Works
- Construction of five retention basins for stormwater management, fully compliant with hydrogeological regulations, involving a total earth movement of around 100,000 m³.
- Development of a surface drainage system (35,000 m³) and an infiltration system (30,000 m³) to ensure efficient and sustainable water resource management.
Photovoltaic Plant
- Installation of 3,700 solar trackers, more than 180,000 photovoltaic modules, and 21 power stations equipped with dedicated control rooms for real-time monitoring and operational management.
- Construction of five medium-voltage (MV) collection substations, an advanced video surveillance system with thermal cameras and microwave sensors, and a SCADA system for remote control and supervision.
Environmental Mitigation
- Installation of five water wells for the irrigation of approximately 6,000 native olive trees, creating an ecological buffer zone that enhances and integrates with the surrounding landscape.
- Implementation of an efficient irrigation system designed to ensure sustainability and full integration with local agricultural activities.
Testing & Commissioning
- Execution of final testing and commissioning activities in full compliance with current regulations, client specifications, and Terna Grid Code – Annex 68, ensuring high performance, safety, and reliability.
Results
Thanks to its technical expertise and integrated project management capabilities, Altenia delivered two high-efficiency, turnkey solar power plants that meet the highest quality and safety standards.
This achievement stands as a tangible example of innovation in the agrivoltaic sector, where renewable energy production, agriculture, and environmental protection coexist harmoniously.
The project contributes to the sustainable development of the region and supports the decarbonization goals set at national and European levels.
