Realization of a HV/MV substation in Sicily

Area: High voltage

Year: 2025

Scope

On behalf of a leading Italian electricity and gas producer, Terna Energy Solutions Group carried out a strategic project to connect a 28 MWp photovoltaic plant to the National Transmission Grid.
The goal was to ensure the commissioning of the plant within the scheduled timeframe, through the construction of a temporary HV/MV substation using a rapidly deployable SCRI solution, followed by the development of the permanent configuration. The project ensured full compliance with Terna standards, as well as reliability and safety.

Activities

As part of the project, all civil and electromechanical works required for the connection were designed and executed, including:

  • Construction of a temporary 150/20 kV substation with a rental transformer and fast-deployable SCRI equipment
  • Development of the permanent substation with a 30 MVA transformer, PASS module, and SPCC and SCADA systems
  • Installation of 700metre high-voltage underground cable link, including HV cables and optical fiber
  • Installation of LV and MV switchgear, protection and control systems, along with all related civil works (excavations, foundations, tanks, fencing)
  • Site management, commissioning, and service tests for both the temporary and permanent solutions

Results

Thanks to this project, the 28 MWp photovoltaic plant was rapidly connected to the National Transmission Grid via the temporary substation, ensuring full compliance with contractual milestones. The subsequent completion of the permanent substation consolidated the connection infrastructure, providing the client with a reliable, safe, and fully integrated plant within the national grid.
